BEST DAY SPA
MATÉOS
Enter the "Quiet Zone," relax and let the world go away.
Everything here is soothing: Fountains bubble, music is soft, lights are low, candles flicker, and there's lavender in the air. The massage masters will work their magic, adding a touch of decadence in the form of Peruvian chocolate and Tuscan wine. Facials and peels unveil a new you, and, for something more intense, there's a medical-grade skin-care clinic on site.

BEST RADIO PERSONALITY
VAL HART, KCCY (96.9 FM)
Hart returned to the Springs last summer after a year with a country station called "The Wolf," up in Seattle. Evidently, the espresso IV drip they issue at the Seattle airport didn't agree with her. In any case, we're happy to have her back - and glad somebody's around to keep her morning co-host, Willie, in line.

READERS' CHOICE - BEST RADIO STATION
KRCC (91.5 FM)
The Springs' favorite radio station just keeps getting better. This year, it added digital subchannels chockablock with more of the music and public radio
programming that keeps this community supporting the analog mothership. In a radio world filled with narrow formats and niche programming, KRCC offers something for everyone.

BEST TV NEWS PROGRAM
KOAA/CHANNELS 5&30’S 5 P.M. NEWS
The numbers don't lie, and KOAA's 5 p.m. team of Georgiann Lymberopoulos and Rob Quirk was the top local newscast, beating out KOAA's 10 p.m. team of Rob Quirk and Lisa Lyden by the slimmest of margins in the latest ratings. In your face, 10 p.m. Rob Quirk!

BEST TV REPORTER
JAMES JARMAN, KOAA/CHANNELS 5&30
Jarman's turned into the Springs' very own Chris Hansen (who made his name with "To Catch a Predator" on NBC's "Dateline") with his series of reports on local sex offenders. Plus, those "Most Wanted Predators" promos? Totally cool.

As KRDO's investigative reporter, Land-rock takes on a lot of serious stories: "Former councilman accused of drugging his date," "Bridging the racism gap," "Prostitution problem in Colorado Springs," "Investigation finds cotton candy sweet, sticky." We kid. We kid because we love.

BEST TV ANCHOR
JEANNETTE HYNES, KXRM/CHANNEL 21
We renamed this category the "Lisa Lyden Memorial Award" last year so we could spread the wealth a little more. This year, it'll have to be the Jeannette Hynes memorial award, since she left our local Fox affiliate the very day we went to press with this section. Hynes is a capable anchor and reporter, though, and we're sure she'll be back on our TV sets

READERS' CHOICE - BEST STATION FOR TV NEWS
KOAA/CHANNELS 5&30
KOAA has been the top-rated station in town for years - no small feat for an NBC affiliate, since that network has been struggling. The keys to KOAA's success have been stability and commitment. Lisa Lyden and Rob Quirk have been holding down the anchor desk since Zebulon Pike was scouting the area, and the station's reporters, weather forecasters and support staff are all top-notch.

READERS' CHOICE - BEST PLACE TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWNERS
GARDEN OF THE GODS
Let's all send some love out to the children of railroad magnate Charles Elliot Perkins, who, in 1909, donated this extraordinary park to the people of Colorado Springs. BEST NONPROFIT

Over the past 38 years, more than 58,000 local children have had new school clothes to wear, thanks to this all-volunteer corps of dedicated women. But "Operation School Bell" is just one of their projects. They're also busy with hearing screenings for little ones, providing assault-survivor kits, giving Buddy Bears to first responders for children in emergencies, running the Bargain Box thrift shop, naming the community's volunteer of the year and teaching children how to deal with those who are different through the Kids on the Block puppet theater. Not only that, they're building a new facility so they can expand.

BEST NONPROFIT EVENT
MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM FOUNDATION GALAS
Every gala is more clever than the one before, and they've dynamited same-old, same-old out of fundraising events. One year, the sold-out crowd followed the yellow brick road past witches and scarecrows, Dorothy and Toto to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the planned children's hospital. Last spring, during the construction of Memorial Hospital North, partygoers donned hard hats and tool belts with their tuxedoes and gowns, wound through construction zones to get to their tables and turned into little kids playing with Tonka heavy-equipment centerpieces. Topping them this April was a Dr. Suess night, "Oh, the Places You'll Go," celebrating the new Memorial Hospital for Children. Dress for the evening: Black tie and/or Seussian. The Whos raised money for the children's "Play Zone." What fun.
