ORMAO DANCE COMPANY
What looked like a dank, deserted cavern to most folks looked like
Radio City Music Hall to Jan Johnson, founder of Ormao Dance
Company. The old Gazette building on South Prospect Street called
to her and she answered with "Press" and "Prepress;' two site-specific
installations that paid homage to the heyday of journalism.
Dancers rolled and slinked through the former press and paper
storage rooms while actors and musicians rounded out the cast.
Interviews of a dozen former Gazette employees, including pressmen
and reporters, were edited into mini art films and screened in
alcoves. I hope Johnson finds more unlikely spots for her dancers
to caper through in the future.
